Basically there competing for a spot on the roster,, so they get most of the play time,, the coaches want to see how they play in a real game,, the proven players are there in preseason to, but don't get much play time. There are roster sizes through the preseason that the teams have to meet, so player (some) get cut as it goes along , they get paid what the teams offer them,, the minimum is somewhere around 250K, when they make it onto the team.

Yo! I got yo answer in my pocket! Preseason players play during reg. season games all the time. Take rookies for example. Reggie Bush, Vince Young, etc. They played in preseason games because they were good. Heck even the big names like Donovan, TO, Brady, etc play in preseason games and then they play in the regular season.

I do think I understand what the basics of your question is, as in, What is the league minimum for players? $285,000 for first year players.

Or perhaps, why have players play in preseason games? To see if they are good enough to make the team. If they made it to the preseason the NFL requires the team to pay the league minimum (or more) to a player (prorated based on each game that they play in) but the coaching staff has to cut their roster to 52 players. At the beginning of preseason they have about 64 players on their roster. June 1st is the cutoff date to have a preseason roster. If you make it past June 1st, then you get a salary of $285,000 per year. But each preseason game cuts a few people from the roster to get to that magic number of 52. If you play in 1 preseason game then you don't get the whole $285k. You'll get a portion of it (or 1 games worth).

Perhaps you were asking, why do some players get paid more than others? Because they have good agents. Talent can go a long way too but NFL contracts are based on performance. So anytime you see a contract that says "Player gets $X Million. That X is determined on performance. Very rarely does any player see their entire contract money. So a good base salary is mainly due to a good agents bargaining skills.

I hope this helps!

There is no such thing as preseason players and regular season players. If you make it through preseason then you are on the regular season team. However they may have some players on the practice squad. They make alot less then those three you mentioned. Still great money but alot less.

because the players who play in the preseason are nothing but backups and practice squad players lookin for game experience. they arent as good as the starters and dont play 1/5 as much. they can get paid anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand to be on a practice squad. tony romo only got paid like 3 million to back up bledsoe this past season before taking over starting duties. thats the most ive seen a back up get in the past few years.
