Common question - it can be confusing with so many gadgets on the market today.

PDA - personal digital assistant - the term is independent of what type of pda you have. Basically, there are two 'categories' of pda's: pocket pc and palm. Both categories have a varitable garden of software you can choose from - but you have to stay within your 'category'. Pocket pc cannot run Palm software, and Palm can't run PocketPC.

Pocket PC's generally use the Microsoft Mobile operating system, and are usually what I recommend since it is a familiar interface with a small learning curve for most. Dell and HP have great devices that are easy on the pocketbook. Microsoft Mobile operating system has 'pocket' versions of familiar software such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

Palm's operating system is used on devices like the Treo; and like the Pocket PC this can be with or independent of a phone. Palm used to be much harder to learn with it's own flavor of shorthand, but has come a long way in user friendliness.

I hope this helps, good luck!
