I am about to graduate with a BFA in graphic design. I have learned a lot of skills and feel I have a lot to offer. The problem is, there are no job opportunities whatsoever where I live. I mean really nothing, literally. I am feeling at my wits end and am not prepared to move for the next couple of years. I feel like kicking myself for majoring in something so useless. What should I do? Go back to school for something else? Tough it out and get a service job? Has anyone had a similar experience? What did you do? Sallie Mae is going to come find me in about 6 months and start taking fingers and toes!!!!

Your education isn't useless. A lot of employers put more emphasis on the 4 year degree these days, regardless of what it's in. Many managers believe that you have just spent 4 years accomplishing one goal, so you should have the skills to meet long term objectives in business as well. You probably just don't live in a Graphic Arts hot spot. Try concentrating on an entry level marketing position, a management training program with a Fortune 500 or something similar. I know in the past when I was looking to add a marketing expert to my team that we placed an emphasis on Graphic Arts degrees because the person would have been trained in something that is attractive to the consumer. You may find out that your degree gives you more flexibility that you originally thought.

Good luck!

your major doesnt mean anything. try to apply in various jobs anyways. what are you intersted in besides? try applying for jobs in business fields such as marketing, advertising, pr, communications. that way you have a major that's a little similar. if they ask you why you are applying, say your major gave you a good education and now you have a broad view, etc. turn it into a good thing. try getting at least temp work, or better yet temp to perm through staffing agencies. ever considered applying to jobs outside of your city? you never know maybe u can find something nice and a good company would pay for relocation! :) good luck to you!
