I'm researching for my novel, and i was hoping someone might be able to help me out...ideas or speculations would also be appeciated.

Deoderant (and body odor) are cultural things that we take for granted today. In the late 1800's, I'd say people were limited to bathing, cologne or maybe talcum powder.
Sweat was an accepted part of life.

I think Mum's was around then.

I know they still used a lot of perfumes and oils.

They stood next to smellier people. Like taking your ugly friend to the bar to make you look more attractive by comparison.
