We just got a 10 month old colt, and he seems to be kinda sore on one side of his mouth - he is rubbing it on his hay net and on anything else he can find, a lot more than the other side. We were wondering if anyone knew whether he is just teething normally or if there could be something wrong that he needs to see the dentist for?

He is quite happy for us to rub his nose and doesn't seem to be in severe pain at all and there is no evidence of injury on his face.

We had the vet out this morning for something else, so they looked at his teeth as well. Apart from a few sharp points which were rasped, they were fine and are all through. Thank you for your help.

It might just be itchiness. When my filly was about 10 months she did that. If its cribbing (eating wood) it might just be boredom or malnutrition. Foals are usually a little mouthy so don't worry about it. Make sure a salt block is available for him and that might help

I would suggest having a vet take a look in his mouth. He should be getting his first set of molars right now, which would make sense why he's rubbing his face, but horses should get regular dental care as their teeth are erupting to make sure that they are coming in properly, and aren't infected or abcessing. Best of luck with your new youngster :)

The only time i saw a horse rub their nose on something alot was when mine broke her nose, and i worked at a barn that had foals.
You might want to ask your vet.

confident, she could be. Now it's time to get some teething toys! those which you will put in the freezer are maximum suitable, via fact the coldness soothes their gums and numbs the soreness. wish each and every little thing works out! :)

when my 10 mth old filly started to teeth (sp?) she was very oral and liked to chew a lot. it may be because he is teething. i would check with your vet. good luck and best of wishes!!
