The Great Pyramid was built by Pharaoh Khafra' (2520-2494BC) At that time the capitol was the city later to be known as Memphis.
Memphis remained the continuing seat of political power, even when the Pharaoh maintained a seat in another capitol.
Its name in those early times was Hiku-Ptah or a little later, Hut-Ra-Ptah. Meaning "Mansion of the soul of Ptah".
Ptah was always considered, the patron God of Memphis as was to become known.There is a great Old Kingdom story called,"The City of the Elven King",that relates to Memphis.
The city is thought to have been founded by, 'Aha (2920BC).
The modern name has derived from its Old Kingdom name.
When Pepi 1(2289-2255BC), built his pyramid at Saqqara. He named it Men-nefer-Mare'.
The name soon came to designate the area, and then eventually the city itself.It was called Meni-nefer and Menfi.
It was the visiting Greeks who gave it the Greek"translated" name of Memphis.
Except for several archaeological sites and a museum nothing remains of Memphis today.
