The professionalism of the box and a predetermined idea of the company will affect your choice (whether or not the company has proven itself with quality products in the past). Also, people tend to see the more expensive toothpaste/whatever as the better product. Other factors would include whether or not it is organic, or if it is targeted to something the consumer is looking for (ex. whitening)

Mostly it's about trust. People buy a name that they are familiar with. That's why marketers create "brands" Get people to remember a name, and create an image around the name. For toothpaste I think people will stick with one once they find one that they like. Most people have probably tried a few different ones because they were on sale, and decided to stick with one because of taste and if it seemed to make their teeth and mouth feel clean after ward. Then there are the types who just always buy the cheapest, even if it's a few pennies difference.

Brand recognition is huge! Advertisers use things such as slogans and jingles to make the brain instant recall these items. For example, if i said lets whats great auto insurance? Many would say Geico because of those snappy commercials. Catchiness and humor makes the brain want more of the product and draws people in. It works.

the only reason you buy something is because you chose to. The effect of advertising is the affect on profit margins. this simply means that advertising is the single most important asset that a toothpaste company has. the tricks of the trade are becoming more subtle and powerful and they rely on factors of the subconscious mind which most people do not understand. In this way we watch tv and buy buy buy.

Manufacturers have teams for developing new products. They do much research based on psychological testing methods.

They have experts to think of the impact of each aspect of the operation and product: how does it taste and does that have some psych. effect? How does the package look?

Of course all TV commercials, since they cost a fortune, are analyzed over and over for any psych. undertones. They train the actors to produce exactly the effect they desire.
