No, he is just practicing. My daughter was sitting up by her self at 4 months, and before she could do it on her own we used a boppy. A boppy is a curved pillow that helps support them while they are sitting and if they fall back they hit the boppy not the floor. It was very helpful for her to learn how to sit on her own.

At 3 months you should be doing "baby sit up" excercises with your baby.
Place your thumbs in their hands and you hold on to their forearms and they should be able to pull themselves up into sitting position.
you aren;t goint to hurt the babies spine

Not one bit. I was doing that at my baby's 3 month. She then started sitting (very briefly) at 6 months. Now at 8 months, she can sit up as long as she wants.

It is an old wives tale that it can, but I haven't seen any evidence of it hurting their spines.

You're not hurting him. If anything, you're helping him build up his abdominal muscles. If you're unsure, ask your doctor at his next checkup.

If you support his little back while he is sitting up on your knee, it should be okay.

as long as you support his head and neck well then he should be ok. if it looks like he's uncomfortable don't hold him like that.
