All wheel drive is capable of running AWD at any time. Because of a center differential or viscous coupling between front & rear axles.
Four wheel drive is selectable & usable only on slippery surfaces.
Dangerous to be in four wheel drive on dry surfaces because when you turn the different rates of rotation on both axles & wheels cause a dragging ( think skid) motion when turning & can cause lock up of all wheels.

4x4 is not power to all four wheels . It's only one in front and one in back unless you install the necessary equipment so that all four wheels turn. All wheel drive is all wheels turning but not necessarily the same power to each wheel.

yes,
all wheel drive means there is a computer that will send less power to wheels that are slipping, and more power to wheels that have traction. a regular 4x4 doesnt do this, it just sends the same power to all wheels all the time.
