Earth formed 4.567 billion years ago from the solar nebula, with the Sun and the other planets. At first it was molten but the outer layer of the planet cooled when water began accumulating in the atmosphere. The moon formed later as the result of the impact with a Mars-sized object known as Theia.

The Earth and other planets in our Solar System were formed by the accumulation of smaller hunks of material probably from the collision of an older star with some other very large object. That collision formed a disk of material in space which was spinning very rapidly. Various materials lumped together as the disk spun around forming the various planets we have today. At the center of the disk huge amounts of gases gathered into a massive cloud which eventually ignited due to the internal pressures within it. Our Sun was thus formed, and began heating all of the other objects in the near space around it. Theory = David H. Levy, "GUIDE TO SKYWATCHING."

The Big Bang theory relates to theories about the origin of the entire Universe, not just our Solar System. If you are interested in those theories and some excellent diagrams of how it all might have happened, please see Ian Ridpath's Book, ASTRONOMY, DK Publishing, NY, NY.

After the big bang there was alot of debris and matter floating around the universe, some of it clumped together by a force of gravity and later cooled forming Earth.
