The Greeks were probably the first to practice organized slavery. It was so much of a business and an institution that its practice would role over into the Roman Empire where every citizen was a slave. The empire could use any citizen anytime or place. Most nations had slavery, which usually were your prisoners. If you shamed your self in free society, you committed yourself to a life of slavery.

Africans were not the first or only choice used as slave in America. Whites were called Indenture Servants. By law, the title slave could not be cast upon an Anglo Saxon once they arrived to the new world. They worked just as hard though.

At any rate, Africans made the best slave over Native Americans, Caucasians, Spanish, etc, because they built up a greater immunity to all the different sickness that each culture was accustomed too. Since a slave was an investment, it needed to be protected. However, the Spanish always viewed us as second class which is why we have the word "*****" which means "Black Object" meant to live a life as a servant, second class and subordinate to whites. In other words, Africans were not the first choice, but the best choice and most white don't realize how close they were to being slaves themselves. Of course they don't teach this in our schools, but the hints and clues are all there.

Slavery was not started in the US. African kings (black Africans) had been trading and selling slaves captured in war for centuries. When Europeans began exploring Africa, the kings were eager to expand their wealth and power. Hence, the beginning of the slave trade. Europeans discovered a cheap resource for labor and the kings became more wealthy. The southern US developed an agrarian base and the slave trade was a natural part of that base.

Cheap manual labor.

Slavery was needed with the invention of the Cotton Gin and landowners needed workers to pick the cotton. Otherwise, slavery would've died in the 18th century.
