I was sexually abused...and let me tell you...I am truly happy. I've healed, and am healing, and I am happy, but it still hurts at times.
People put up a happy face because that's what we're used to doing, that's what society tells us we ought to do.
It's hard to heal from sexual abuse. It's something you have to face truthfully and put all BS aside. But it can happen...you can heal.
Sexual abuse survivors are not exempt from happiness, but those who do not heal aren't happy for very long.
Sexual abuse is a scar that goes where no one can see, and can only be felt by the heart and soul. But it can heal. Just takes time.

I was 'sexually abused' before I even had a 'memory' and I was also sexually abused as a teen ager by someone else ... and I don't think that you can 'heal' from something like that, although you can 'get past it' and find happiness. The man I am now married to (ten years on Valentine's Day) helped me 'get rid of a lot of past pain' ... so I can 'think about the abuse' and not 'hurt inside' any more ... and I am TOTALLY HAPPY!
I have the 'feeling' that you are asking this question because you have been sexually abused and you are 'devastated by it' ... and if that is so, then you need to see a 'counselor' and 'talk about it' and with that counselor find ways to see that 'life can be good' ... even 'better than before' ... after abuse. I'll pray for you ...

I wonder, can anybody really be truly happy?
If someone had something bad happen to them in the past, as long as they face it, they can get rid of negative feelings. If someone was abused as a small child but they merely used defense mechanisms to rationalize a reason that it happened, then the real feelings become repressed. Subconsciously, you will always have those feelings.

You try to move on with your life and find the good. You never completely heal from it...it is always with you. True happiness is attainable but things will trigger the bad memories and the fight to overcome it will begin again.

They move on, or they learn how to forgive and forget. Like if you heard the Amish people forgiving the guy who killed 5 girls. Some people are talented enough to do that, while others take time. I think they're like emotionally scarred, but doing good all the same.

Just like anything that hurts us.. We don't CONSTANTLY dwell on it. We may not forget, but we CAN move on.
