why we had slavery?

There's shelves of books in the library that attempt to answer this question because there is no one correct answer.

The simple answer is because when the country was being settled, other countries brought their practice of slavery to this new land. They brought it to Mexico and the Caribean as well. They practiced it in their own country and so did African countries. It wasn't anything new at the time, sadly.

Slave labor was cheap in the sense that all you had to do was bring them to a land light years from the native homeland, feed them (barely), house them (below human standards), give them a new religion (christianity), take away their: culture, name, self esteem, identity, women/manhood, seperate families, etc...

All of this in the name of Cotton, Sugar, and Tobacco.
