i question in my biology book is when a jellyfish is removed from its saltwater and placed into fresh water it swells and bursts! and then it says is a jellyfish an animal or a plant? why? (hint: think about how plants cells and animal cells react when placed in solution.) i hope there is someone that can help me! haha thanks and ahve a great day

It's an ANIMAL! Animals are a major group of organisms, classified as the kingdom Animalia or Metazoa. In general they are multicellular, capable of locomotion at some stage in their life cycle, responsive to their environment, and feed by consuming other organisms or parts of them. Their body plan becomes fixed as they develop, usually early on in their development as embryos, although some undergo a process of metamorphosis later on.

Jellyfish are marine invertebrates a subdivision of the kingdom animalia

As for your other question, water rushes in to balance the concentration of salt within the jelly fish in ratio to the fresh water environment

it is called Diffusion!!!!

A jellyfish is classed as a Cnidarian which is a very simple animal. It only has very basic features of animals including a contractile nerve net. They have cnidocytes which are stinging cells along their tentacles. This is the defining characteristic of a cnidarian. The reason a jellyfish would burst when placed in fresh water would be due to the fact that water osmotically moves from a place of low solute concentration to a place of high solute concentration. Because Jellyfish are made up of ~ 95% water (and this water would be saltier than the fresh water in the bucket) the fresh water would diffuse into the Jellyfish and make it burst. (If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, the cell will gain water through osmosis.)* Such a solution is called a hypotonic solution. Also, plants have cell walls and other defences against dessication such as stomata and a waxy cuticle. If these were placed in fresh water they would (for a time) be resistant against becoming turgid and bursting.

Animal cells do not have a rigid cell wall. Plant cells do. When an animal cell is put into a solution with a lesser concentration of salt than the concentration of salt inside the cell, water rushes into the cell to equalize the concentration. Since animal cells have no cell wall, they burst when the cell swells too much. Plants cells do have a rigid cell wall, which prevents them from bursting when put into a hypotonic solution. Therefore, the jellyfish is an animal, since it bursts.

i answered this question in your other posting, but basically it is an animal and the reason it bursts is due to diffusion of water across the cell membranes in an attempt to equalize the salt concentration in the cell and outside of the cell

A jellyfish has these characteristics of animals:

1. eukaryotic cells without cell walls
2. has a nervous system
3. is heterotrophic

A lot of sea creatures the distinction between plant and animal is rather fuzzy.
