I have a R reg 1.6LX. 80,000 on the clock. Had new wishbones last year. New exhast around 4 years ago. Seems to be a reliable car but when something goes wrong it is always a puzzle to find. Steering is funny but had two new tyres, tracking amended and steering rack/column has passed examination. Any ideas? Also the clutch is due to go any day and Cam belt has never been changed. Is it worth spending the money on or time to get rid?

I don't happen to like Escorts, the early ones were a real pain to keep reliable...but newer ones seem to be ok. It's really a personal choice though...if I owned it, and it only had 80000 miles on it, I would probably keep it. Of course, I'm a mechanic, so most problems don't bother me too much.

Is it worth spending a few hundred a year to you, or would you rather spend 12 to 20 thousand on a new one?

p.s. I just sold a 93 tempo yesterday, a very reliable car, and it has 187000 on it...still running strong.

I'd say get rid of it and get a GM.

They last longer and are easier to find problems.

My mother and father each had fords (aerostar, taurus) and both were tough to find what was wrong.

My car is a 91 firebird and so far I have not had any major problems. I bought the car with 74,000 miles on it and it now has close to 90,000. I drive an hour to work and back every weekday and it is perfect.

Go with a GM! GM being Chevy, Pontiac, Cadilac,Hummer, and a few others.

If you plan to do these repairs yourself, I would definitely hold onto the vehicle. The expected repairs you mention are often relatively cheap as they are part of the regular maintenance of the vehicle. At a shop, clutch replacement could run around $350 (USD) and I'm guessing less than $125 (USD) for the belt. To do these yourself, I'd put the clutch, throw out bearing, and pressure plate around $140 (USD) and the belt at $30 (USD).

Why is the clutch due to go? Is it slipping? What year is the car? 80000 miles is not a lot. I have 145k+ on my truck.
If you want to get something new and more reliable and/or cooler, get a new ride.
