i have been told that it may be the capacitor on the motor, does this sound right?

SOUNDS LIKE THE BELT IS LOOSE, MAY BE THE CAPACITATOR, TAKE THE BACK OFF OF IT AND SEE

It could well be the brushes on the motor you can get a set for around £15 a pair from a repair shop

The belt may be lose but I suspect that you may need to replsce the brushes in the motor. They can be easily done if your a DIYer.

It's probably the belt that turns it -try automotive belt dressing if you can get to the belt through the back---unplug dryer first.

it's more than likely the capacitor it needs this to start it turning if it was the belt it would just keep slipping

It sounds like the belt.They always seem to brake in winter when you most need them.Hope by now you have got it working.

try changing the bushes on motor

your belt may have stretched, turn it upside down and have a look.

Might be that he belt is slack.
