Baby constipation is a more common problem than many parents realize. Just as with adults, constipation in babies is characterized by having difficulty passing stools. On the other hand, symptoms of constipation cannot necessarily be recognized by how often the baby has a bowel movement because this changes from child to child and depends on the baby’s age as well. Newborns, for example, generally have bowel movements several times per day. In addition, a breastfed baby will tend to have softer stools while one fed artificial formula will have harder, darker stools. You may try this site, this is where I find really good information about this:

My suggestion, read as much as you can, knowledge is power

It depends on what is happening that makes you think he is constipated. Some new moms think the baby is constipated if he turns red in the face, grunts and cries when moving his bowels. As long as the poop is soft or mushy he is fine. He just has to learn how to use his abdominal muscles and push it out.
If the poop is hard balls you might give him a little extra water (1-2 oz per day) and see if this helps. If he is not pooping at all for more than 24 hours, is not eating well or vomiting you should take him in to the dr. or hospital right away.

1 tbsp of karo syrup in water helps let them sip on it through out the day because they get enough water with breastmilk or formula also introducing new fluids can upset their tummy. If your baby is on iron based formula just the regular kind then it is probably the cause although iron aides in brain development it tends to make them constipated. Talk to your doc he's awful young and you got to be so careful when they are that little. If you're breastfeeding look at what you're eating a lot of dairy can cause problems too. Try to bicycle his legs as excercise aids in constipation.

If your baby is on breast milk ONLY, he is not constipated.
That's what I taught too when I heard my newborn pushing for hours.
Ask your doctor first, because if you start helping him poop at that age he might start relating on that help and have a real constipation later.
Good luck!

FIRST, see a doctor . You may have to change the baby's formula . Ask the doctor about" Catnip and Fennel " . Maybe your baby is too young to take catnip & fennel , but it is sometimes used for stomach problems in infants.....but I'm not sure about NEWBORNS . I am not a doctor....so see one .

They may have to have a suppository. But the doctor will tell you how much. Also sometimes grape juice will loosen up a baby's bowel.
