I've got an automatic transmission (console not column). This has happened before, but a few runs through the gears solved it. Not this time.

I just repaired one a few days ago, the vehicle would shift through the gears, but the key would not come out. You will need some knowledge and a wiring diagram, but double check the BTSI solenoid mounted to the shifter in the console. The system uses various controls, including the stop lamp switch and a lock solenoid inside the steering column itself. It might pay to have it properly diagnosis.

Yes, I have a solution. The solenoid that allows the ignition cylinder to turn by means of either supplying a ground or a 12V signal supplied by the automatic shifter that is located inside the same has become faulty. This sounds really stupid, but it is all part of the anti-theft and the deal that locks out your transmission shifter until you touch the brakes. The only way to fix this back to factory is to replace the entire shifter assembly unless they have released a switch to repair your old shifter. This is not a for sure as there are several other problems that I have seen, but this is the one that was that caused most of the problems I've seen. This is a difficult job to do being a mechanic, so good luck.

Try hitting the brake pedal very hard as you are turinging the key on. We had an 86 nissan pickup that had a sticky ignition lock and sometimes you felt like you were standing on the brake pedal to get it to turn over.

Most likely your problem is with the steering lock. When you try to start the car and the ignition key won't turn, apply some pressure to the steering wheel in the direction that it will move. That should fix it!

try jiggling the steering wheel as you turn the key. The bad news is your transmission could be dying.
