You'll need to download iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download to transfer music to it. Install the software and connect the iPod to your computer. Now you can drag and drop your music files to the main Library in iTunes. Once you are done, click File -> Sync to put the songs on your iPod.

1. Read the instruction pamphlet which came with your nano. Then, open the .pdf manual from the software CD and read it.
2. Use iTunes. You can only load software onto your nano with iTunes. All downloaded music must move into the nano via iTunes.
3. If you start by loading a CD into your computer and then importing those files into your iTunes library, you'll get a good idea how to go through the procedure.
4. Once you get the hang of it, then use the playlists, or the smart playlists to make your library even more easy to use.
5. Any music you purchase from the Apple music library store is protected and you cannot move it to any other ipod. However, my much-more-geeky son told me his new ipod with video can somehow do this (I didn't ask how, sorry). All I know is my year old nano cannot.

You downloaded iTunes, and you bought music from the iTunes store, and you plugged the iPod in and transferred music over? It sounds from your question like you expect the iPod to do all that by itself?

go to www.limewire.com.
download the free "basic" version.
when you open it up, click on audio and type the song's name. then the song will pop up. you double-click it. it will start to download. plug your ipod in and open up itunes. when itunes opens up, under your ipod's name
( which is whatever you decided to call it. ex: Cassie's ipod ) it will have a little icon that says music. click on it. go back to limewire. when the song is done downloading, click and drag it into itunes and your ipod should be updated and have your songs in.
best of luck, i hope i explained everything well enough :-)

As others have said, get iTunes:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
With it, you can rip songs from your (it will even get the song names, ablum names, etc.) CDs, or buy them from the iTunes store.
