The name of that whistled tune is 'the Colonel Bogey March' in the 1957 movie The Bridge on the River Kwai, starring Alec Guinness & Jack Hawkins. Get the movie if you can-you'll never forget it.

The new version of the song is titled 'The River Kwai March' & is slightly different.

PS: they weren't going to war. They are POWs of the Japanese in ww2 that're being marched to the river where they have to build a bridge.
