Hi, I was wondering how long you have to change your name on documents such as driver's license and social security card after you get your final decree. What if you are getting married two months later, can you just wait until you take your new married name and change evervything then to save hassle? Your help is appreciated...thank you!!! As far as I know, you dont have to change your last name after you get divorced. You have the option of going back to your maiden name, but its not a requirement. You can keep the married name, and therefore you wont have to go about changing all your identification. And if you are getting married soon, just change your name to your husband's when you get married again. Or, you can do like a girl I once knew did. She kept her own last name and eventually added a hyphen.

You are not required to change your name after a divorce. Even if you weren't getting married again, you could keep your ex's name for as long as you wanted to. So if you're changing your name after marriage anyway, just wait to do that. It would only make sense to change back to your maiden name if you were planning to keep it for a length of time.

I don't know about divorce, but when I got married, my driver's license was set to expire in 4 months, so I just waited until it was time to renew to change my license.
If you wait until you are remarried to get all your documents, you are probably going to have to take your birth certificate, your first marriage license, divorce decree, and new marriage license to prove your identity.

If in the Decree says that you have to change it then its right away but i think if your getting married in two mths it ok to wait and get the new doc to get everything changed if it that short time but any longer thne you should change it. that just my knowing not a law or anything. It happened to em in Tn also.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think you HAVE to change your name back, and YES, you can just change it again after getting remarried.
I've not been divorced, but some friends have, and I believe that was their experience.

I'd just wait until I got remarried. You don't have to change your name after a divorce.

If you are getting remarried and will be changing your name to the new hubby's name, don't bother taking your maiden name back.
