I am trying to find less glamorous than Bollywood-type, but richly-textured in look and emotions, character actresses in India. I like Seema Bisvas a great deal, and I know there are more, but glitz and spitz seem to be all I can find when India and movies are used in the same sentence. I am expecially interested in ones with burning dark eyes and an extremely passionate emotional range but regarding more important issues such as death in family, etc. Can you turn my on to a few? THANKS!

There are quite a few and I'm assuming you mean actresses who work primarily in the Hindi film industry. Konkona Sen-Sharma, Nandita Das, Ayesha Dharker are a few names that come to mind. Riya Sen and Raima Sen have been known to show interest in deglamourized and sensitive roles within non-commercial Indian cinema.
