i used to be an assistant manager at my last job, where i held a key to the store. i quit and went back to get my final check, which was for about $600. They said they needed my uniforms and key...I turned in my uniform, but I think I lost my key the week earlier while snowboarding several hours away. The manager said she could not give me the check without the key. How can she hold my $600 when I have no way of retrieving the key hours away buried in the snow. The key only says "do not duplicate" on it, no name of where it goes to. What should I do?

The store probably has a policy regarding what to do in the event a key is lost. It may involve replacing locks, or it may just be that the employee has to pay for a new key. In any event, the store could rightly "charge" you for the lost key, but holding your entire check does sound right; unless it costs that much to replace the key.
My best advice, talk to the store manager and explain the situation. Perhaps a deal can be struck so you can get your money, or at least most of it. If the store manager won't help, perhaps the district manager will speak to you about the issue.
You may wish to write a letter to the store and ask (demand) you pay check. If that doesn't work, you could file a small claims action.
You should seek the advice of a lawyer in your area.
Good luck!

He cannot hold your check hostage, but he can deduct from that check the amount it will take replace the locks that the key you lost went to.
Your boss has no way of knowing of you lost it snow boarding or gave it to gunter the thug to rob the place as soon as you leave.
Depending on how many locks that key opened you may be in for quite a large amount of money.

They can deduct the actual cost to have a new key made, but they can't withhold the rest. Threaten legal action unless they release the funds. Agree to a donation for the cost of the key, but require an invoice showing the actual cost of the key.

Actually, if you lost the key to the store, they can hold your check for a while until it's either returned or lost for sure, then deduct costs. Same rule applied to me when I had a key to a clinic I worked at, then quit. They don't want to chance the possibility of your lying about it (which you're not, obviously), then breaking in later.

By law they can hold you check or take out the cost of replacing all the locks at the business. You can call the mountain and see if they found the keys.

They cannot withhold your pay. Technically, they cannot even deduct the cost of the key, or to have a locksmith change the lock unless you signed a waiver of your rights. If not, they have to go to court, win a judgement against you, then have your wages garnished.

They can not hold your last check. They can take out an appropiate amount to replace the key or lock from the check.
