I have a 99 Ford escort. For the past few weeks whenever the car is not in motion it seems to idle hard to where the car is shaking a little. If I am at a light too long and try to take off it almost hesitates and jerks into motion. I need to take it to the mechanic but I was just wondering if anyone might have some ideas as to what this could be? I was thinking it might be a problem with the cat converter or something? I am a female and just do not want to get screwed at the mechanics i would like to have some idea of what might be wrong.

Hare to understand when you say idle hard.
From your description it sounds like it's having trouble idling and is hesistating.

There are hundreds of causes, however the most likely (and some you can check yourself.

1. Check your air filter. A clogged air filter can cause problems and is a very easy fix.
2. When did you last replace your fuel filter? Another place that can cause hesistation.
3. I recommend using a few bottles of fuel injection cleaner (pour down the gas tank) that may help remove gunk from the injectors as well.

Other things that a mechanic would need to diagnose (unless you know what you're doing)

a. Check to see if EGR valve is stuck open. Stuck EGR valves are a common cause for hesistation.
b. Idle needs adjustment.
c. Get a Tune Up.

How many miles on the car? Has it been maintained? Oil changed? Tuned up recently?
Could be a number of things...vacuum leak, bad spark, bad computer...

sounds like you got a busted motor mount, there are three one in the front of the engine pass side
one transmission front, one Tranny rear, look at them if you see rubber sticking out of any one of
them its bad.mounts average from 10.00 to as
much as 60.00 call your local autoparts store and price them. Then shop around for the best labor price.
