Back up the files you really need on DVD, or preferably a portable Hard-Drive.

If they are important you should definitely back them up. You never know when your hard drive might fail, or become corrupted.

I usually just use CD or DVD Roms and dump copies of important files onto them. There are programs that you can use to do it for you, but I usually just do it manually. You don't have to keep backing up the same file over and over unless you are making changes to it - you can look at the date on the file to see if it has been modified, and just back up the updated ones after you do an initial 100% backup.

I would buy an external hard drive. They are very inexpensive and will allow you to back up your entire hard drive. Of course if you don't want to back up, nothing is stopping you from doing that. I also recommend removing the brakes from your car. You can always hit a tree to stop. All jokes aside, having a back up can prevent a catastrophe if you lose your current hard drive. They call them unexpected because they happen when you least expect.

I go with the theory "if I lose it, can I ever get another copy of it?". If the answer is no, then I back it up.
