Once you filed a claim, you will be interviewed on the telephone on why you no longer work at that employer. After they finished interviewing you, they will call your former employer if the reason you stated is exactly the same reason that you are no longer working at that company. Once they finished interviewing your former employer, you have to wait for 10 business days for your unemployment office to decide if you qualify. Always fill out the claim form properly. If you work as a temp for one day, your unemployment insurance office will want you to report your earnings for that one day. You can't lie. However, unemployment is not enough to cover expenses, so go find another job, Your benefits is the minimum that you work. I was only qualified for 6 months of unemployment since that was all I worked. My claim is OVER.

All states require a 7 day waiting period, also, you can not file for unemployment until your current employment ends. Check the web site for your state, they will list the amount of money you can get each week and what is required from the state to keep receiving benefits. Most states require you fill out a form every week and mail it in, on the form they will ask you to list at least 3 places you contacted for work, the name of the business, contact persons name and/or telephone. Money each week will be small and will depend on the amount of money you earned at your job. Maximum weekly earnings for the state of California is around $400 something, but that is if you were earning over $50,000 a year or something like that. And you have to have been working for at least 6 months at a job to file for benefits. Check with your state unemployment insurance office web site. They will have all the information you are looking for, as well as how to file.

I can only give you the details from what I remember. I was laid off in August 2001. I also received ~4-5 weeks of severance pay. What I remember is this:

- Unemployment didn't kick in until the severance had run out.
- I filed all the paperwork online and didn't have to talk to one person (state of Minnesota).
- Money they give you does max out...meaning if you are making a lot of money at your current job, you certainly don't get the equivalent of what you are making being unemployed.
- They give you the option of taking taxes out up front....my advice is to do it. Either that or you will owe Uncle Sam big time next tax season.
- I applied as soon as I was unemployed. As long as I gave them the correct dates, things came my way as expected. I didn't have to wait a week...or 4-5 weeks to apply.
- I did have to be actively job searching to get the unemployment.

I started my new job in November 2001, so I wasn't on unemployment that long. My recollection is that it lasts for up to 6 months.
