Went to college in San Diego, now live in Montana, so I enjoy both, and they both have their merits.

With the beaches, I can hang out all day on the sand, go swimming in the ocean, snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing. Everything water related. I love it and I miss it so much. There's just something so peaceful about the water to me.

In the mountains, it's all natural landscapes, and it's a reminder of the wilderness as it is untouched by civilization. Definitely more of an outdoor rugged spirit, with hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and camping.

That said, I'll never get tired of a beach vacation, but a mountain vacation can somewhat be dependent on the season and on the weather for enjoyment.

I reside in Michigan and as you know, we're surrounded by beaches...but every chance I get, I visit my brother, who owns a vacation home in the Sangra de Cristo mountain range in Colorado.
Beaches are lovely but can't compare to the mountains. The first time I saw the Rockies I was speechless. There's hiking, fresh air, mountain streams, abundant wildlife to observe, but most importantly, the solitude! You won't find that at too many beaches.
As you can imagine, the best time to do this is summer, though fall is nice too. Have fun!

It all depends on what I feel like doing. Mountain vacation is awesome summer or winter. Summertime, the scenery is breathtaking, the trails are interesting (especially when you walk your way up the mountain to a waterfall). You can visit caves, go on the rapids, go for a boat cruise. Have dip in the pool, hot tub or the hot springs and sip a few cold ones back. Wintertime, you can go skating, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling or tobogganing. After a long day you can soak in the hot tub or start the fireplace to warm up and relax with a hot drink.

The beach because, I don't like cold weather or snow. Besides, it's easier to cool off at the beach than it is to warm up in the mountains.
