Because people are too self centered and they, in essence don't give a rats as*. Most are so consumed with self or hatred of others they would rather see the world go up in smoke...

Love is the core of everything good. When you find a group of people that constantly show love among themselves, love for their neighbors to the extent that they would never kill or hurt ANYONE intentionally, and have a strong desire to do the will of their creator, they can show you the answer to your question and it will fill your heart with exquisite joy.
