Every once in a while, I notice my 3 1/2 month old baby's soft spot on top of her head is pulsing - I can see the skin pulsing up and down as her heart beats. It's not always there, but when it is, it's pretty obvious and makes me a little worried. Is this normal?

Yes, that's totally normal. There are many blood vessels that run throughout the entire skull (to feed the brain, of course). Since this area has yet to harden, it is often possible to feel/see the baby's pulse. In fact, scalp veins are often used for IV access for sick infants, because they are so accessible.

when a a baby is young, they naturaly have a soft spot because the skill is still not compltly formed. So when the baby is ither sleeping or in just normal every ady activity you may notice that the soft spot is pulsing. whice is exactly what it;'s doing. It;'s mearly the blood being passed through the veins and arterys under the soft area. It's normal and actually i common worry amung parents. My sisters baby did the same thing.

The soft spot on a baby's head allows the skull to grow. You can sometimes count the baby's pulse on this spot by counting the beats. This is all perfectly normal.

It scared me the first time I noticed this, too. My pediatrician said it's normal and it's a good thing! Also, when my son was in the hospital for hernia surgery, I noticed that sometimes the nurses would actually take his pulse by gently touching his soft-spot.

Not to worry!

Yes, totally normal. This is the fontanel, the ara of skin covering the gap between the skull plates that are growing together. Blood circulates in the vessels of the brain and beneath the skin, and the the rise and fall is the blood circulating with respiration. Totally normal.

Yes, but if it is bulging, then it is not and your baby will need to be seen right away. Also, if the soft spot is sunken can indicate dehydration.

Yes I belive this is normal. Just make sure you watch for it ever being sunk in or if it is ever puffed out, if this ever happens you need to take you baby to the doc ASAP!!!
