Fig wasp, The males live only long enough to cut a tunnel out of the fig in which they were hatched, the females live long enough to lay their eggs in a fig flower. Adult life measured in hours.

As a few people have mentioned, gastrotrichs usually live only a few days.
There are several mayfly species that exist for only a day or less as adults. This also goes for many adult insects, such as parasitic wasps, even moths and butterflies.
However, the qualifier there is 'adult' life. Many of these insects can take a year or more to develop as larvae before they transform into a briefly living adult. The adult is merely the reproductive and dispersal phase of their life cycle.
We tend to think of things like mayflies or gall wasps only living one day because that's the only period we see them. But that mayfly may have been living as a larva at the bottom of a pond for two years before it developed wings and went off in search of a mate.

Gastrotrich --- are a phylum of microscopic (0.06-3.0 mm) animals abundant in fresh water and marine environments. Most fresh water species are part of the periphyton and benthos.
Its average life span is very short - about three days.

your question clearly says "animal" . most of your answerer's here are giving you "insects". i don't know the shortest lifespan of an animal. i just thought i would clear up that animals and insects are two totally different categories.

The gastrotich lives 3 days. It is an equatic animal.
