You named a couple good ones. Dick Butkis, Roosevelt Grier, Robert Brazille (former Oilers linebacker nicknamed "Dr. Doom" by other players), Kenny Houston (for defensive backs).

Some say Urlacer, I don't think so. Reggie White was a defensive player that you heard alot in a game. Lawrence is the next guy come to mind. This is the first year I have ever heard Urlacer's name called all season.

There were many great defensive players, from Butkus to Hirsch to Lott to Greene. But the most dominating defensive player I've seen is Lawrence Taylor. Never been a big Giant fan, but that guy ruined offenses and really revolutionized the rushing LB position. I doubt Derrick Thomas or Charles Haley would have had the great careers they had without LT.

Reggie White was the best for many reasons. He could absolutely dominate a football game and was one of the greatest leaders ever. LT was also very good if not great. The list could be long, but Reggie was so much better than number 2 that it is hard to see how anyone could make another argument.

There really isn't one. But the guy who had the most impact and changed the game was Lawrence Taylor.
Taylor's showed what a mobile linebacker with great speed and a nose for the ball could be a serious problem if he lined up in various spots and exploited weak spots in the defense.

Lawrence Taylor changed the way that the game is played. He was the defensive star of a team that had one of the best defenses of his generation and won 2 super bowls.

Reggie White, best DE to play the game, even better than the great Deacon Jones. He was a once in a lifetime combo of huge size (6'5" 300lbs) and decent speed. He could play any position on the line and make QBs and O-Linemen alike quake in their boots from each of 'em.

Derrick Thomas, Lawrence Taylor will always overshadow him, but LT had the unfair advantage of playing coked up. If Derrick Thomas hadn't died, he would have been recognized by people other than Chiefs fans as the greatest.

Dick Butkus. He completely redefined the middle linebacker position and was one of the toughest players to ever play the game. He hit hard all the time and never slowed down. I also like Mike Singletary, but I dont think you can pull one player out of that 85 Bears defense, because they made each other better.
