a friend is someone to catch you when you fall and bring you back up... they dont ignore you or your needs, they dont stab your back (not literally), they dont talk behind your back, they dont cheat on you, and most of all they should care about your feelings and care about you... if they are not a friends, then they are a foe or someone you dont want to spend your time with

Play a little game in your head (i.e. don't let your "friend" know what you're doing) & set him / her / them a little test or 2.
Pose them a question, something simple, like:
"I'm getting on really well at ......"
What is their instant reaction?
A happy smile, or a bit of sulk, with a dark (negative) comment which makes you feel unsure?
Keep doing that until you know for certain they are NOT really on your side, they do actually have a hidden agenda...
EG. they are bitchy, petty, spiteful, vindictive...
You do not want to give those types of people information about your life cos they may try to use that info. against you.
To put that in a simpler way:
A friend makes you feel good.
OK? I hope this helps you cos I know it's very confusing- people don't wear a label on their head- so you need to acquire the skills to be discerning.
I wish you all the best. God bless.

A friend is someone who is always there for you in good times and in bad times.
A shoulder to cry on when your down,a person to be happy for you when your on the up.
Unfortunately it takes years to find someone that fits the bill.

A friend is someone that you can trust completely and whole-heartedly. If you question the trust--------then they are not a true-blue friend.
