Start with the 57-60 Power glide, move up to the Turbo 350, the 700 R4. Any transmission that was fitted to a Chevrolet small block will be usable. My recommendation is a 350. Cheap, reliable easy to get parts for.

To answer your question, the transmission will bolt up, and the 283 will fit. The Camaro came out with the LT1, which is a newer version of the small block. However, unless you build the 283, the stock v6 in the Camaro will have more horsepower. Also, since it's fuel injected, it'll get better gas mileage than the carb'd small block. If you're wanting more horsepower, build a 350 or the 283, or supercharge the v6. hope that helped

these were all rwd chevy pattern,
some were both chevy and bop, and others were juat bop or chevy only
the univeral ones had 10 bolt holes in the bellhousing instead of just the normal 6
not all models of auto trannies were cast with both patterns
the top of the bellhousing on chevy ones are pointed upwards
the bop ones were pointed downwards and rounded like fords and others were

Chevy uses the same bell housing pattern for most all v-8 motors. With a very inexpensive adapter plate you can also run olds and pontiac transmissions
