I'm planning on making the move to Seattle from Los Angeles in the near future - namely because I need to have more greenery and down-to-earth people in my life. Are there any former Angelinos who have made the transistion? What are your thoughts?

If you don't like coffee now, you might once you get here. I didn't like it either until I got here, and now I'm hooked. As for grunge, I rarely hear it here. There's quite a diverse selection of music to choose from here...pop, rap, country, rock, indy, whatever.

You will definitely get more greenery here, and people are definitely laid back, almost to a fault. The one thing they tend not to be too laid back about is politics. Most here are democrats, socialists, or green party. Seattle definitely leans left, way left.

The only complaint I've heard from Californians is that it's too gloomy and rains too much, particularly in the winter. If you don't mind that, you should be good to go.

Peace.

Coming from San Diego I feel Seattle would be a good choice, however, try to find leads on a job before you get here. Seattle can be a challenging place to find work. I have a MA and it took me 3 months. It is a diverse city, unfortunately you won't find find as good of taco shops here. The people are however a lot more down to earth here. I saw a wreck once in LA at 2nd and Vermont. Some guys later drove by and yelled at the person saying "You deserved it bee-och". You will not find that mentality here.

I'm not from Los Angeles, but being from the East Coast, I feel like Seattle is more than grunge & coffee. Actually, it's a very diverse place.

Keep in mind that Seattle is made of several distinct neighborhoods. Your going to find more grunge & coffee in Capitol Hill & U District. I think someone from Los Angeles would be very comfortable in Greenlake.

Seattle is a gorgeous fun city with much more to offer than coffee and grunge (which actually, might be dead). The punk scene is hopping though. Good beer, great food, beautiful scenery, tons to do, and yes, it does rain here, but NOT year round. The people of Seattle are amazing. One warning: the radio stations DO in fact, play Nirvana and Alice in Chains just about every song and there is at least one espresso stand or Starbucks on every block... You'll get used to it. ;-)

Seriously, Seattle is a fantastic city. Best of luck.

first of all Coffee is never 'on its way out' in seattle, we do love out coffee, but we also like tea and juice.
Grunge is pretty much gone, but we still have our hippies and hobos. We do have greenery galor, tons of great trails and scenic areas. Most people are down to earth, but we do have our crazies, not nearly as many as L.A though.
It does rain a lot, or rather look like its going to rain a lot.

You should move to Tennessee, Nashville. No just kidding but that is where I live and let me tell you I visited LA and hated it becasuse the people were asses. Seattle is a nice city, and no I think it is large enough to have diversity. I live in Nashville and you don't have to like country music to like it here. I am sure you can find a Coke in Seattle : ) Now good luck finding a country music radio staion there. I visited Seattle and no such thing there.

Absoultely! many people hate grunge here. I personally don't drink coffee either. I love the Pacific NW.
people I work with like Christian or Soft Rock, oldies, and that seems to be very popular here.

No, you'll hate Seattle; it's rainy and grey, and the traffic is awful (even considering you're from L.A.) If you're not a techie or a coffee-lover, or not into the jazz scene, I'd move someplace else.

I, on the other hand, love Seattle, and I'm tired of people who move here and bellyache constantly about the rain.

I'm not from Los Angeles (which I think is the worst place in the country) but I also think that Seattle is GREAT.
