Skillwise there may never be a player that could match Lemieux's physical strength, skills, hands and actual game smarts. You could not knock Lemieux off the puck and he was a one man show until his team picked up some players to help him in the 90's. Gretzky was amazing, but Lemieux was the best.

There were a few records that Gretzky had that would be hard to touch like his 92 goals.
Lemieux could have given Gretzky a run for his money in over all points had he been healthy and played the same number of years.
I still have to give Gretzky a slight edge to to the fact he held back later on in his career and became more of a true captain and assists man. For some reason goal scoring didn't excite him as much as it first did.

Its hard to compare as there games were different. Gretzky was the best offensive player period. I remember watching him on TV sitting behind the net with the puck what seemed like forever. The defenceman both decided to go after him each going on one side of the net, Gretzky moved slightly and put a perfect pass to a teammate on the tape for a one timer goal. Gretzky flat out made everyone he played with better.
Cant honestly say i have seen enough of Mario to make an honest statement how well he was.
Both will be in the Hockey Hall of fame (not sure if they are already).

Hrmm.. I'd say Wayne Gretz.. nvm, I say Lemieux. Gretzky did have some mad stacked teams. Lemieux got robbed of some of his career because of injuries AND cancer. But, I'll stay with Lemieux. Gretzky will always be called the best player of all time, just because he has the reputation of it, and is nick named "The Great One" .. more like the "Surrounded By Super Stars One"

Honestly, look at it this way. At their heights, Gretzky still has the goals, assists, and points lead for single season over Lemieux. Injured or not, Gretzky put up better numbers than Lemieux. Just because someone who was injured could have played better doesn't mean he was better. I mean, if that were true, I could give you some solid handicapped hockey players who could give Gretzky a run for his money...

Well, if Lemieux wasn't diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, he would have been even close to Gretzky. Lemieux's still on of the best players in NHL history, right behind the Great One.

i think that lemieux did more for his team than gretzky. when gretzky was on the oilers and having 200 point seasons he had about 5 future hall of famers on his team. Who did Lemieux have? he had jagr for like 5 years. Lemieux carried his teams while gretzky helped his teams

Mario Lemieux was the better all around gifted player then Wayne Gretzky. when Mario Lemieux retire his first time he was at .83 GOALS PER GAME % in only 723 GAMES PLAYED ahead of another great goals scorer Mike Bossy with 0.76, but Lemieux wanted to play for his son that never seen him play yet. but he ended up finishing with a GPG % of 0.75 915 GAMES PLAYED, way much better then the Great One at 0.60 GPG % 1487 GAMES PLAYED.
so yes if Lemieux never had Hodgkin's lymphoma and he wasn't limited due to injuries during his last four regular seasons and had a healthy career yes Lemieux would be the top POINTS scorer of all time today.
yes i loved Gretzky but he had a team when the Oilers came to the NHL to Lemieux being drafted by one of the worst teams at the time so my money goes on Lemieux.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Tough question, 2 different types of players. Lemieux might get the nod, but part of it is being healthy, and Mario's body failed him. But keep in mind.....Lemieux didnt win any cups without Jagr and quite a few world class players...both Mario and Wayne made the others around them better.

I agree with you 100%. Had Lemieux not had to end his career early twice because of injury and illness he would be considerd the greatest of all time. His combination of size and skill was unbeliveable. My favorite example of his greatness is from the year he was diagnosed with cancer...he missed two months of games, came back 12 points behind in the scoring race and won by 12 points
