Butter has a higher density than toasted bread. Thus the center of gravity is closer to the buttered side of the toast. If there is any rotation on the toast, it will not only spend more time with the buttered side facing down, but when the buttered side is down it is less likely to flip over again.
Thus exists and increased probability that the toast will land with the buttered side down.

It doesn't always happen but generally the heaviest end of anything lands first. In this case, the butter gives that side more weight. The greater the amount of butter, the more likely it is to land butterside down.
Even an item like a coin has a heavier heads or tails, meaning that the odds are NOT 50/50 it will land one way or the other. However, on all US mint coins the weight difference is so negligible it makes less than 1/100th of a percent difference. However, if you are a compulsive heads or tailser, bet heads.

This is a common myth.
It's all been researched.
If you think about it, it's basically like the toss of a coin. It will either land on one side or the other. It's 50/50 and nothing to do with the buttered side being heavier or anything so technical.
The conclusion was that people will only notice and remember the more negative outcome.
If the toast were to land on the un buttered side, you'd think 'oh well' and forget it, but if were to land on the buttered side, you'd think 'B*gger! that', and storm off ranting and raving.
You always tend to pass on the negative info that spoilt a part of your day, but never the mundain.

its because of gravity the buttered side being the heaviest - you could always drop the toast on the floor first the butter it and perhaps add a favourite topping of strawberry jam or marmite...

I think the buttered side is heavier - so that is the side that ends up facing downward.
