Don't buy an Ipod. Only fools buy one. Get a Dell jukebox, or samsung MP3 player. For the cost of a 4 GB I pod, you can get a 30 GB Dell. Then, you can use yahoo music or napster and load all the songs on it you want for 15$ a month. Or you can buy an Ipod,,which WILL NOT work with any website other then itunes. Ipods are a joke, and a waste of money.

I agree that there are great alternatives to ipods........depends what you need the mp3 player to do. For video, photo, and music, I recommend Creative Zen Vision W.........comes with 30 gig or 60 gig hard drive. The best thing about it is that it comes with a 4.3" widescreen LCD screen, same size as the PSP's screen.....great mutimedia player.
I know because I own the Creative and ipod 5th gen..........I ditched the ipod and use the Creative.
At www.newegg.com, the price is decent, but the shipping is lightning fast. Check around for a good deal.

1st part of your question, YES! ^_^ There are different brands, like Creative lab, San disk, and others. These other brands you'll find to be more affordable than the Apple Ipod. You can find these brands at Best Buy, Circuit City, or Radio Shack, really any store that sells electronic devices.
2nd part, sadly No, :( you can only download from your computer into your mp3 Player. Not from CD's to your Mp3 Player...UNLESS you download the songs from your CD, to your computer, THEN to your Mp3 player.
Good luck to ya!
Hope this helped! ^_^

Zune is a great alternative to iPod. But beware, it seems like whenever the Zune is near too much static it will shut itself down. It did this to me three times within 12 hours of purchasing it. So I exchanged it for an iPod (which I am actually having some minor trouble with but oh well).
Check out the forums on zunescene.com, there's a three page discussion of the above mentioned problem. But other than that problem with my Zune the thing was perfect.

My girlfriend has a Zune, and it does everything and MORE than an iPod Video for almost HALF the price. It's a lot more durable, too. You're not just looking at a white screen with text. And if you're the 97% of the world that uses Microsoft software, the Zune is much more compatible and error-free.

The Zune is like an Ipod but in my opinion better since you wirelessly share music with other Zune owners. Its a lot cheaper too.

There are lots of ones that are really good that you can get for about 1/2 the price. Check out overstock.com and Target. My husband got one there for about $90.
