The Melbourne Shuffle is a style of dance, originating in the late 1980s in the Melbourne underground culture underground dance music dance party scene. The style is taken from typical Jazz moves & incorporated with a modern twist.
The basis of the Melbourne Shuffle has traditionally been footwork; either performed sliding left to right, on the spot or in a triangular movement.
Performed well, shufflers can seem to be gliding across the dance floor and defying gravity.
Dance moves from other numerous styles such as mimeing, popping, locking, liquiding and breaking can also be incorporated into shuffling.
Today known as "rocking" to the Melbourne locals, the name "Melbourne Shuffle" has been derived from overseas DJs, partygoers, visitors and the media trying to describe this phenomenon.
Locals have simply called it the "shuffle" since 1992.

The previous answer is spot on.
It is a local melbourne dance that Melbournians do in nightclubs (often probably without realising that they are doing the Melbourne Shuffle).
I didn't know all that other information about it, but I know that there was an academic paper written on it a few years ago.
Good answer!

Its the shuffle that Melbournians do when they are standing in front of a friend and talking to them they tend to shuffle their feet . they cant stand still. If you have lived in Melbourne for at least 5o years you will be able to do it with some dexterity. It has dropped off a bit since the porkies came in because they tend to be one person entertainment stopping the shufflers from acting out their best performances

As has been mentioned it is a style of dance that originated in melbourne. It is specific to the rave scene, generally hard nrg, hard trance styles of music. It is called a shuffle because the common theme among dancers is that they shuffle their feet along the floor, other than that it is very freestyle. many shufflers use talcum powder to make the floor slippery enough to slide easily.
