I started a new job about 4 months ago. My 18 month old son has been sick off and on for a month now (and is home sick again today). How do you balance the time off and giving your all when you are there? I do not want my employer to feel that I am using my child as an excuse to stay home from work.

My daughter is divorced with a small child. Since she has custody, whe is the one elected to say home. However my work schedule allows me the freedom to saty home. I'm home with a sick grandchild today. We use all resouces to stay with her. My daughter, the childs father, the greatgrandparents. We also use extended family like cousins, friends and neighbors. You can be very creative if you need to be. I know we are in a good situaion and when my children were little ( my daughter turned 26 yesterday) there was a sick kids daycare where I worked. Now sometimes when there is no help available my granddaudater goes to work with mom.

Depending on where you live there are some state laws that allow a certain amount of time off to care for a sick child. (In California it's called Kin Care) To be safe I would bring your employer a note from the pediatrician, even if they are not asking for one. You want documentation of your absences in the file in case this turns in to a situation where you may be written up or disciplined for excessive absences from work.

Check in your area if there are places where you can take your child if they are sick with minor illnesses. The local hospitals some times run a sick child day care that is run by off duty nurses. There is a cost for this, but not as much as missing an entire day from work! I know you want to be there for your child every time that they are not well, but some times you can not always be the one with him if you are a working parent. Some times you just have to accept that it will have to be someone else that cares for him when he is not 100%. If the illness is serious then take the time off until things are on the mend. But for the smaller stuff you are going to have to find some kind of alternative care for him so you can continue to work.
