As it turns out, most of the "reality show" tryouts, never tell the people what type of show they are actually auditioning for. So, they wind up on shows that make absolutely no sense for them to participate in and thus, we have Reality Hell !!
Only game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, and reality shows like Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Biggest Loser, actually are the ones that people want to be on when they audition. (I'm sure there are a few others.)
The rest of them are like a potpourri of auditions and then they pick which shows the contestants will participate in, whether the people wanted that show or not. Most of the time, they don't even know what the pool of shows are that they are auditioning for, so when they wind up on one that they hate, then their true colors come out.
I remember one show where everyone got locked into a house and had to go cold turkey from smoking to win $250,000. Not a single one of the people knew what they were doing when the host came in and told them the rules. It was mayhem from the beginning and the show didn't last very long.
In the case of Jerry Springer, when it first started, it was more real with honest-to-God idiots on there; then it became a 15-seconds of fame scenario with everything scripted. Who knows why anyone would want to go on National Television, even as an actor, and portray themselves like that!!
YEAH, you're right, only trashy, annoying, formerly-and-still nobody's would be on those type of shows!!!!

I think they are the only ones who try out for them. They want to be famous. Did you notice they are also the ones that the reporters choose to retell the story of the recent tornado in the trailer park?
