it triggers a computer for the governement and they tap your phone if said combination of suspicious words appears too many times.

...like i said, it's a paranoid and over the top urban legen, but i was curious if this thing originated from maybe a less extreme experiance.

The federal authorities do have that capability... however it is not thought to be universaly employed... only used randomly in certain areas at certain times or when a specific investigation calls for it.

This is also used on email and messagenger services as well... any elecronic communication not just phones.... including espacialy chat rooms.

I've never heard that one before! But it sounds pretty weird, like most urban legends. And like most urban legends, it has a moral to it: "Don't trust the government. They are out there, they are watching." That statement is somewhat true because nothing is really private anymore. But in typical urban legend style, the warning goes to the extreme.

I believe that "urban legend" is now a fact. The government now routinely conducts illegal wiretaps...that has been all over the news for the last year. It is also a well established fact that the government possesses technology that is ten years ahead of what is available to the public...so they have had the technology to fulfill the "urban legend" for at least twenty years.

WHAT??

My phone has been tapped, in the last couple of years, a FEW times.

I think it may have spawned from the Patriot Act, in which some officials were considering wiretapping household phones and searching for key words from possible terrorists. This theory, of course, is completely blown out of proportion because what about all those people who say "bomb" and "Iraq" innocently? ;)

The 1998 Wil Smith Gene Hackman movie "Enemy of the State" referred to that type of surveillance. I'm sure Big Brother would love to be able to do that, since it's the nature of law enforcement to want to have total access to all information, and they certainly have the technical capability, but I have doubts that they could ever get the cooperation and coordination from the many different phone companies, who own and control the phone lines and switches, to bring it off.
