Scientists are working on inventions and innovations that sci-fi fans have read about for decades before the technology was available. So, I'm curious....do you think this is the normal progression of technology or is our future being molded by the minds of sci-fi authors? If there were no sci-fi novels ever written, would we be looking at a completely different world with different, or even stunted, technology?

As a designer, this subjectis quite interesting. you can think of Sci-fi writers as imagineers and the technologists as engineers. agreed most inventions are created by the designer but designers draw inspiration from other designers. Sci fi writers give a good basis for designs and innovation becuase of their natural flair for creativity. But in the same way, sci fi writers get their ideas from feasability, most are probably well educated and although a lot of ideas seem farfetched they're not that far from our grasp in reality.
A recent design assignment of mine was based around a central thought "dreams to reality, how important is feasability?"
Dreams are great, all designs and inventions start off as dreams. Fiction is textualised dreams and impossibilies and science presents a way of solving pactical impossiblities. the two shouldn't fit but they do, and with great success.

I think sci-fi has had some influence but most technology would still exist if there was no sci fi.
Without sci-fi we might have reached the moon later then we did but e.g. the telephone, electronics and computers were not written about in any sci-fi novels before their invention.

In a sense, yes...what authors create with their minds has a base somewhere in reality. Escalators to moving sidewalks..all you have to do is step on and ride...that was a feature of a sci-fi book..and now? We have them in airports.
I think sci-fi authors challenge scientists to explore. And, if there were no sci-fi..our world would go on advancing anyway. Maybe differently..I don't know.
