I say start to shop at a Sam's Club or Costco Warehouse. They have food you can buy in bulk so you in turn spend less money having to take trip after trip to the grocery store for food because the food lasts longer.
Make big meals and freeze them in portions so you can easily reheat them later - another reason to stay away from the store.
Make a weekly menu and stick to it. Only buy necessary items. Make more food from scratch. For example, buying a box of noodles and some hamburger and sauce yo ucan make your own hamburger helper and can feed many more people that just the one box of hamburger helper.
Check out in store deals- use coupons, check your receipts to make sure all pricing is correct and they didn't overcharge you on anything.
Substitute some items for generic brands versus the more well known items. But dont compromise on the items you MUST have brand name- like I need Miracle Whip- not Mayo and wont change from that no matter what the sale is.
Buy more chicken and turkey products.

The easiest things to prepare are the most expensive. If you buy a frozen Stouffer's lasagna for the family, for instance, you could be paying more than twice what it would cost to make that lasagna yourself. The cheapest foods are generally the least processed. So buy potatoes, not instant mashed potatoes. Buy tuna, not pre-made tuna salad. Etc. Don't buy pre-cut vegetables; save money and cut your own. Buy whole fruits and veggies, bags of rice (not boxes) and beans, bags of pasta (not shake and bake), and get creative and make your own meals.
Don't waste money on filler foods and snacks that don't constitute a meal or offer any nutrition: jello, popcicles, candy, chips, gatorade, cookies, fruit drinks and juices, etc. These are absurdly expensive but don't fill you up when you eat/drink them.

Look at the sales ad or buy in the bulk. If you don't, then groceries is going to cost a lot.
