A purity ring is a reminder for a gal or guy to keep her/his self morally clean (a virgin) until she/he is married.

It's a very sick idea developed by the über-Christians to protect it's men's fragile male egos. By making a girl pledge sexual "purity", her future husband doesn't have to worry that he is the "biggest" or "best" she's ever had since she has nothing to compare him to.

Men are supposed to "sow their wild oates" and women are supposed to remain "pure". Of course, if men are out "sowing" then where are all the "pure" women?

"Christianity claims to honor the woman as mother but does not acknowledge her power to give life. Thus Woman... is damned for doing the very thing that keeps the race alive (having sex). Man, for his part, is damned for partaking of that guilty sexuality, and doomed to wander the world turning virgins into whores, then cursing his fate in having no 'true' mate to love." ~ Erica Jong from the book Witches.

Yes. They are a symbol of abstinence until marriage. Some guys have them too.

That's exactly what it does. It's a reminder to her, and a message to others, that she has promised not to giver herself away until her wedding day.
