Lots of hard work to start. Art Howe, former Pirates and Astros second baseman, went to the Pirates try-out camp. Some do succeed that way.

High school baseball is the first step. Now you will want to play college ball, but if you are really good you may want to enter the draft out of high school. If you play college though you will most likely start at a higher level when you enter the MLB. If you go straight out of high school you will enter the draft, hopefully get drafted. If you are drafted you will sign a contract with the MLB team you were drafted by, and you will probably be assigned to a A team or AA if you are really talented. Then you just play baseball. Play good, and put up good numbers and you will probably get moved up levels and earn more money. Eventually you may get moved up to the major league team. Once you do that you are in the majors, but dont get too excited. Often players are called up from the minors to the majors and then sent back down after a couple of weeks, so if you want to secure your place in the big leagues, you need to perform right away. Personally I wouldnt enter the draft right out of high school unless I was ranked on Baseball Americas Top 100 players (magazine that ranks top high school players).

Practice, hard work, commitment to the sport, excel at every level you play in to get noticed by college scouts, play division 1 college ball, and never let anyone tell you you're not good enough.
Don't think you can be like Joe Mauer and go right from HS to the minors, college ball is very important. Mauer is just one of those special players.
Oh and being a left handed power pitcher might help....lol.

Practice. Play for a college team or a semi-pro team. If you get good enough, scouts will be interested in you and you may end up playing in class A Minor Leagues. Then, you keep playing hard from there.

Baseball has to be the hardest sport to make it all the way to the big stage. You normally have to play in at least three-four leagues before you make it to the big show. You have to practice EVERY day and have natural talent. You have to be strong and/or fast. You need great hand-eye coordination. Work at it if you think you have the natural talent.

You dont have to do all of that....every year MLB teams hold open tryouts....granted, the chances of actually making a squad (minor league or otherwise) are virtually 0.

You practice a lot and have the love for the sport. If you play well in high school then you get into a good college with a scholership if they like you and then BAM!! you are now a good athelete and might make it to the pros.
