I have a 1994 VW Jetta diesel and it is idling at approx. 1000rpm (about 1150 with the choke pulled out). Is this too high or is it ok? I know it burn more fuel but does it damage the engine/transmission in any way?

For all the people saying that there is no choke... there is device that you pull to help the glow plugs warm up... I thought it was called a choke.

around 1000 rpm or even just a hair below is fine. When it is cold the vehicle should idle a little higher until it is warm. Again this normal.

This is just a flyer but a good diesel motor usually can comfortably idle at 350 - 450 rpm. Something is going on with yours. I'd take it to a V.W. dealer to check it out. I'll you how stupid I am, we've owned 9 Case diesel tractors and a worthless Oldsmobile diesel in a pick -up and I've never heard of a choke on diesel motors!

Normal idle on MOST cars is 850 RPM "at normal operating temperature". If it is idling that high, you may have binding linkage or the choke is not fully opening.
If it is BANGING into gear, you could cause other drive train problems. You may also have a "RUN ON" condition when you turn the key off. (Otherwise known as dieseling) If this is happening, LOOK OUT! you could blow off your muffler or burp back into the intake and an engine fire is possible.

first of all...if it's a diesel there's no choke to pull out. I'm not sure about diesel cars, but diesel trucks idle at about 500-600 rpm.

Its perfectly normal for it to run at 1000rpms, thats the norm, it should be pretty quiet check ur muffler if u think it sounds loud, but it will not hurt ur motor or trans.
