Your solution is fairly simple !! To answer your question, yes you can erase your HDD completely and install a fresh copy of Windows XP or whateva your running. You can take it to any computer guy and ask him to do it, but if you feel confident enough, you can even do it yourself at home since you have access to your BIOS.

If you have your OS installation CD, well and good. All you gotta do is go to your BIOS, and look for something like "Boot Device Order" or "Boot Device Priority". You should have 2 - 3 options under this (1st boot device, 2nd boot device, etc.). Simply set your 1st boot device to your CDROM drive, save the changes and exit.

Immediately insert your OS install CD into the CDROM drive and let your PC restart. It should now give you a screen with "Press any key to boot from CD". Press the 'spacebar' or 'enter' key, and you'll enter Windows setup.

From here on, just follow the on-screen instructions and keep your product key handy. If all goes off well, you should be back at your desktop within an hour. Install all hardware drivers, anti-virus, and any other USB devices. And then install all your software back onto your HDD.

Hope this helps ya out, and all the best !!!

i agree with the first answer, its simple to reinstall windows as already stated, the only thing i would add was if you are running xp then at the start up for installing xp you may get the recovery console option if you do then take it it should recover your os and save you losing everything on your hard drive.

to add to that, make sure you don't delete any files that you need, or will be wanting later. You can take your hard drive out and rescue it by putting it into another computer or external hard drive enclosure. (move them somewhere else so you can get them back when you get your computer running again)
