Basically your bank account is used to verify who you are. When someone sends you money it will sit in your paypal account until you decide to transfer it to your bank account. I think you need to have over £50 in your paypal account to transfer it to your bank account for free. Otherwise I think paypal charge you a small fee for transfering the money to your bank. As for paying for things, if you have money in your paypal account the money will come from there, if however your paypal account is 0 the money will come straight from you bank account. Hope this is of some use.

You have a choice of using a bank account or a credit card. Paypal just work as a transfer agent who takes money from one person's account and puts it into another's. They will also hold money in their own account if you ask them. They then act as a bank. It is recommended to use a credit card since if you do not receive an item you can have the charge reversed. That can't be done with a debit card or check.

To save you this problem in the future, just send me full details of all your bank accounts and you will never need to worry about Paypal again. On the other hand - why not visit your Paypal account and read their Help and FAQ pages.

TIP.
Never use money in your paypal account to buy things on Ebay. Use your credit card, then if the item doesn't arrive, it is far easier to get your money back from the credit card company than it is to get it back through Ebay or Paypal. If the seller has no money in their Paypal account you have little chance of getting your money back. If you do get your money back Ebay sometimes charges you up to £15 Administration fee!

There is a choice that you could use money not from your bank account in your PayPal account. This money is usually from selling stuff on Ebay or those "Get Paid" websites.

You have to ask to have money transferred from your Paypal account to your bank account, otherwise it'll just sit there.
You can pay from a credit card or from your bank account. They prefer to take it from your bank, as that way their cost is nil.
I always pay with my Visa, as that pays me a 1% rebate.
