I am after a cheap reliable car for under £1000 that will go on for a few years and have some street cred.

I have been looking at BMW's 316i and 318i in the Auto Trader foraround £800 aged between 91 and 95

Can anyone say what I should be looking out for with these and aslo how good are they?

last year i bought a 318i black for 900 quid it had 120000 miles nice original rims and a CD player i spent 150 quid getting it serviced i bought a kn induction kit and a nice set of BMW mudflaps and a full valet. i also got a 320i badge for the back i sold it before Christmas for 1200 remember if you buy one do not be a boy racer in it or you will have problems also look around don't buy the first one you see stay away from white most will have rust on the arches and they are not nice in white and my advice red , blue , black find one that has 1 years mot and some tax keep it clean and you will have a nice motor happy hunting

The BMW is supposed to be more of a 'drivers' car with its rear wheel drive layout, more direct steering. The Audi would be better on winter roads, especially if it's a quatro version. The brakes on the Audi can be a bit sharp until you are used to them. Audi will have more torque with the turbo, wont need to be revved so hard to get the performance. You will get more value for money with the Audi, they also are arguably the best built cars, very solid. Resale value of the BMW will be slightly higher, but then so will your purchase price. Maintenance wise they are on a par, both prestige german vehicles. However if you buy a later BMW it may still be covered by the cheap 5 year servicing program. Just have a drive and see which one you like best, either one is a good choice.

Orphanboy is correct. Go for the 318. The 316 is underpowered and will be an inefficient fuel guzzler.

your main problem with getting an older beemer is the cost of parts when it goes wrong. Unless you are a reasonable mechanic I would advise you to leave it alone and perhaps look at ford instead they have plenty of cheap parts and are easier to fix.Vauxhall also cheap but less inspired.
If you go for an old big fuel guzzler it will cost you less to buy but more to run. good luck.
