Enders Game - Orson Scott Card (sequels are OK but original is amazing)
The Nights Dawn Trilogy - Peter F Hamilton (Consists of The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist, The Naked God) fantastic trilogy
Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan
Starship Troopers - Robert Heinlein

As you say there are many more but they are all good reads, first two are must reads.

Philip K Dick, Arthur C Clark (a bit geeky), Ursula Leguin (for the ladies), Doris Lessing, Robert Heinlein, Roger Zelazny, Harry Harrison. My all time favourite is Philip K Dick's The Big Time

Well from a knowledge base of zero (we dont know what you HAVE read) I would suggest the Eternal Champion books by Michael Moorcock, Karl Edward Wagner's Darkness Weaves and "A Mote in Gods Eye" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
